Setting up a proxy in Vivaldi

How to set up a proxy in the Vivaldi browser: system settings, extensions, command line, and built-in tools.

Setting Up Proxies in Vivaldi

Vivaldi is a Chromium-based browser with extended functionality. Like other Chromium browsers, Vivaldi uses system proxy settings by default. However, Vivaldi offers some unique features for managing network settings.

System Proxy Settings

Via Vivaldi Interface

  1. Open Vivaldi
  2. Go to Settings (Ctrl+F12 / Cmd+,)
  3. Find the "Network" or "Proxy" section
  4. Vivaldi will redirect you to the OS system proxy settings

Windows

  1. Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy
  2. Enable "Use a proxy server"
  3. Specify the address and port
  4. Save

macOS

  1. System Preferences → Network → Advanced → Proxies
  2. Select the proxy type
  3. Specify the address and port
  4. Apply

Linux

Settings depend on the DE:
- GNOME: Settings → Network → Network Proxy → Manual
- KDE: System Settings → Network Settings → Proxy
- Env variables: http_proxy, https_proxy, all_proxy

Extensions for Proxy Management

Vivaldi is fully compatible with Chrome extensions.

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store in Vivaldi
  2. Install Proxy SwitchyOmega
  3. Configure the profile: protocol, address, port
  4. Optional: create an auto_switch profile with domain-based rules
  5. Switch profiles via the icon in the panel

Advantages of SwitchyOmega in Vivaldi

  • One-click proxy switching
  • Domain-based rules (split tunneling)
  • Support for multiple proxy profiles
  • Quick addition of domains to rules via the context menu

Command Line

Launch Vivaldi with a proxy using a flag:

Windows:

vivaldi.exe --proxy-server="socks5://ip:port"

macOS:

/Applications/Vivaldi.app/Contents/MacOS/Vivaldi --proxy-server="socks5://ip:port"

Linux:

vivaldi --proxy-server="socks5://ip:port"

Supported types: http://, https://, socks4://, socks5://

Exclusions: --proxy-bypass-list="localhost;.local;192.168."

Unique Vivaldi Features

Web Panels

Vivaldi allows opening websites in a sidebar. This is convenient for IP monitoring — open an IP check website as a Web Panel for quick proxy verification.

Multiple Profiles

Vivaldi supports multiple profiles. You can create a separate profile for working through a proxy:
1. Menu → File → New Profile
2. In the new profile, configure the proxy via an extension
3. The main profile remains without a proxy

Tab Stacks

Tab grouping. Useful for organizing work through different proxies — each stack for its own proxy profile.

Command Chain

Vivaldi supports command chains. You can create a command for quick proxy switching via Quick Commands (F2).

DNS Configuration

To prevent DNS leaks:
1. Settings → Privacy → DNS over HTTPS
2. Enable Secure DNS
3. Choose a provider (Cloudflare, Google, NextDNS)
4. Or specify a custom DNS-over-HTTPS URL

When using a SOCKS5 proxy, ensure that DNS requests also go through the proxy. SwitchyOmega has an option "Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5".

WebRTC Protection

Preventing real IP leaks via WebRTC:
1. Open vivaldi://flags
2. Find "WebRTC"
3. Or use the WebRTC Leak Prevent extension

Verifying Settings

  1. Open gproxy.net/tools/my-ip or a similar service
  2. Verify that the proxy IP is displayed
  3. Perform a WebRTC leak test
  4. Perform a DNS leak test

Troubleshooting

Proxy not working

  • Check the correctness of the address and port
  • Ensure the extension is active (icon in the panel)
  • Check if your antivirus is blocking the proxy connection
  • Try disabling Vivaldi Shields for the test site

Slow loading

  • Check the ping to the proxy server
  • Try another proxy from the list
  • Ensure the proxy is not overloaded

Authentication error

  • Check your username and password
  • Ensure your IP is whitelisted (if the proxy uses IP authentication)

Conclusion

Setting up proxies in Vivaldi is similar to other Chromium browsers. SwitchyOmega is recommended for flexible management. Vivaldi's unique features (profiles, Web Panels, Command Chains) make working with proxies more convenient than in Chrome.
